Invest in Yourself

When your organization offers training, what is your initial reaction? All too often, we react negatively to training. We don’t have time to learn something new - we have actual work to do. We expect the training to be boring and inapplicable to our daily work. Perhaps training is offered on something new, and we don't want things to change.

Stop thinking of training as another item on your to-do list, a distraction from your work, and a sign of unwanted change. Start thinking of it as an opportunity to invest in yourself. Whether you want to take on more responsibility at work, get a promotion, or change careers altogether, learning opens the door to endless possibilities.

If you want more responsibility or a promotion at work, start by increasing your efficiency. Training can help by teaching you ways to do things faster or better. When you work more efficiently, you have more time on your hands to ask for additional responsibilities. Further, gearing up now to learn the skills you will need in the future sets the stage for success. Learning those skills now demonstrates ambition, and ambition frequently leads to new responsibilities and roles.

If you are looking to change careers altogether, take advantage of the resources you have now to learn the skills you might need in your new job. Whether you decide to pursue new opportunities tomorrow or five years from now, chances are you won't regret the time spent learning something new.

Even if you don't want to change your responsibilities, role, or career, becoming better at your current job can lead to bonuses and raises. Everyone wants efficient employees, and many are willing to pay more for efficiency gains. What do you have to lose?
