Changes to Exchange Online OAUTH for NetDocuments ndMail

With Microsoft ending support and retiring Basic Authentication for Exchange Online, NetDocument users need to update access mechanisms BEFORE MID-OCTOBER.

What is OAUTH?

OAuth is the preferred way to grant ndMail access to the Exchange service without providing Microsoft credentials directly in the NetDocuments admin console. It is referred to as modern authentication by Microsoft. NetDocuments recently began support for OAuth with Azure Active Directory (AD) to be used as an authentication mechanism for the ndMail Exchange Impersonation account with Exchange Online.

We strongly encourage all NetDocuments customers using Exchange Online with ndMail to switch to this authentication mechanism prior to October 13, 2020, when Microsoft will cease supporting and will retire Basic Authentication for Exchange Online. As a result, if your Exchange Online instance has not been switched to OAuth before that date, then ndMail will also cease to work. (Read this Microsoft article for more information.)

Does this impact me?

No action is required if at least one of the following is true:

  • You implemented ndMail with OAuth after May 2020
  • You use Exchange on-premises (not Office 365)
  • You do not use Azure AD as an identity provider

Action required if:

  • You use ndMail and have Exchange Online (Office 365), then you must act before October 13, 2020.

At Affinity, we are here to help. If you need assistance with changing your authentication mechanism, please contact the Document Management Team at Affinity by calling 877-676-5492, or simply request a consultation.
